The first 12 months of baby's life

Welcome to Onoco's unique data dashboard, designed to provide parents with insights into what the first year of life with a baby might look like. Explore the interactive charts below, featuring anonymized data from eight children. Each child represents a different family routine and feeding method:

This analysis is unique because it was created without any data manipulation and no synthetic data was used. Every single feeding and sleep event was meticulously recorded by parents. The data has been anonymized, prioritizing data safety to ensure privacy.

The absence of data manipulation is a deliberate choice. Instead of adhering to publicly available guidelines, we aimed to present a true-to-life representation of how babies sleep and eat. This approach provides valuable insights into what parents can expect in 'real life,' as opposed to theoretical norms.

Our mobile app, used by tens of thousands of parents worldwide, enables families to log significant aspects of their baby's life. This includes feedings, sleep, nappy changes, bath time, tummy time, medication, and more. Leveraging this wealth of data, we've created a visual representation of a baby's first year, highlighting different routines and feeding methods. This helps parents understand potential patterns and variations they may encounter.

Despite the diversity in routines and feeding methods, our analysis revealed common patterns across all profiles. Initially, the data shows irregular naps and feeding times, reflecting the unpredictable nature of newborns. However, as the year progresses, babies tend to establish more regular routines, indicating a trend towards consistent behavior over time.

It is essential to remember that every baby is different. The routines and behaviors shown in these profiles are examples and may not precisely match your experience. The variability in babies' needs and family routines means that no single profile can capture every possible scenario.

Our analysis is based on over 6 million feedings and 3 million naps logged by parents using the Onoco app. The dashboard was created using Python, with profiles carefully selected based on specific criteria to ensure daily data logging. Profiles that did not meet these criteria were excluded to maintain data quality and consistency.

"This project has been an enlightening experience, allowing me to explore new areas such as building visualizations with Plotly and Dash, customizing layouts with CSS, and working with diverse baby data. Despite challenges like handling data across different time zones and ensuring accurate visualizations, working with this data and helping parents is highly rewarding. I hope these visualizations help parents and caregivers understand the diversity of a baby’s first year and provide reassurance through real-life data.

" Originally, we planned to create a synthetic child profile, an average baby profile representing typical routines and behaviors. However, the differences in routines between babies who follow parent-led routines and those fed on demand were too significant. Additionally, the initial noise in the data made it challenging to create a representative synthetic profile. Therefore, we decided to present a variety of profiles to illustrate different routines and allow parents to see how their experience might look. . "
